Iron & Manganese Filtration

At Clonmel Water, we offer reliable and cost-effective solutions for even the highest levels of Iron and Manganese in your water supply.

  • Iron and Manganese are among the most common well water issues in Ireland, second only to limescale.

  • We provide tailored treatment options to suit the severity of contamination while keeping costs manageable.

  • For low levels, a high-quality water softener is often the simplest and most efficient solution.

  • For moderate to high levels, we recommend advanced backwashing iron filters such as Birm or Katalox for thorough and long-lasting results.

Identifying & Treating Iron & Manganese Issues in Your Water

  1. Iron in water often appears as a brown, red, or orange rust-like colour, and may give your water an unpleasant taste or odour.
  2. It can lead to scaling and blockages in pipework, negatively impacting showers, water pumps, heaters, ballcocks, and other appliances.
  3. Manganese may cause a metallic taste or odour, and often results in black or dark grey specks and staining.
  4. Like hardness and iron, manganese can also cause scaling in appliances, reducing their efficiency and lifespan.
  5. You might notice dark stains on sinks, toilets, or bathtubs, and discolouration in laundry caused by manganese deposits.

Important Considerations for Treatment Sizing & Pricing:

  • Water testing is the essential first step to determine the correct filter system for your specific needs.

  • Your daily water usage and intended application (e.g., domestic or agricultural) will influence the type and size of the filtration system.

  • Installation location matters—filtration systems require shelter, access to power, and proper drainage, which may need to be arranged in advance.

UltraViolet UV Water filters

Ultraviolet technology is used worldwide as the safest and most effective process for bacterial disinfection in water.

Bacteria

Bacteria is commonly found in well water and can fluctuate throughout the year, often increasing with rainfall and other environmental factors. To help prevent serious bacterial contamination, well head protection is strongly recommended as a proactive safeguard.

For effective treatment, ultraviolet (UV) light is widely used. When bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms are exposed to UV light, their reproductive DNA is destroyed. This process renders the pathogens inactive, eliminating their ability to cause harm and ensuring the water is safe for consumption

UV disinfection

Ultraviolet (UV) filters are most effective when used with soft, clear water that is free from colour and turbidity, as these factors can block the transmission of UV rays. This issue can be easily resolved with a Clonmel Water softener or appropriate pre-filtration system.

At Clonmel Water, we follow HSE recommendations and always install UV sterilisers with a 10″ 5-micron pre-filter to ensure maximum effectiveness. Our UV systems require annual maintenance, including the replacement of both the UV lamp and the 5-micron filter.

Although the lamp may still be lit after a year, its optimal germicidal output begins to decline after twelve months or approximately 9,000 hours of continuous use. We offer this replacement service at a fraction of the cost charged by most other providers, ensuring your system stays effective and affordable.

  • Chemical free disinfection

  • No change to water taste or odour

pH Correction

What is pH?

pH is an indicator of how acidic or basic water is. The pH level of pure water is 7.

Your water’s pH should ideally range from 6.5 to 9.5.

How can I determine if my water is acidic?

We always suggest conducting a thorough water analysis. Indicators of low pH water include:

  • A metallic or bitter taste in the water.
  • Issues with hair color (light-colored hair may turn green).
  • Presence of blue-green stains on sinks, bathtubs, toilets, and showers.
  • Problems with plumbing fixtures and fittings (leaks, pinholes, corrosion).

How can this issue be resolved?

Increasing the pH to 7 or higher alleviates these issues and enhances the taste of the water. Clonmel Water can increase the pH of water by installing a pH correction filter. These systems operate by allowing water to flow through a vessel filled with slowly dissolving calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide media.

These minerals dissolve gradually, ‘re-mineralizing’ the water and naturally increasing the pH. Clonmel Water offers two types of filter setups for pH correction. The water can flow through the media using either an in/out flow head or an automatic back-washing filter head. The back-washing valve effectively disturbs, settles, and cleans the media every few days.

This process helps eliminate any iron, manganese, or debris that may accumulate in the unit. It also aids in preventing funneling. Funneling occurs when water takes the easiest route through the media, causing it to flow too quickly for proper interaction with the media.

What level of maintenance is required?

Since the media in a pH filter dissolves into the water to adjust pH, it will eventually need replacement. To prevent depletion of media, we recommend servicing and topping up the system once every 12 months. Clonmel Water provides a comprehensive maintenance service for all well water systems, including well pumps and controls, which are often overlooked.

Water Testing

Thorough and dependable analysis is the essential first step in determining the appropriate water treatment solution. We advise working exclusively with INAB-approved water testing facilities that are not linked to the sale of water treatment systems. This guarantees that testing is independent, precise, verifiable, and conducted professionally.Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance on selecting your local certified testing facility. The assessment parameters for evaluating water quality in individual dwelling water supplies should include the following:
